We Do Our Own Work, Part 2

Every night our dreams show us how it is in our life,

As if to say, “This is how it is–what are you going to do about it?”

Every night, the same question:

“This is how it is.

What are you going to do about it?”

We grow up

By facing up to how it is with our life,

And doing what needs to be done about it.

Every night we get a mirror:

“This is how it is in your life.”

And a question:

“What are you going to do about it?”

Every day, we get another opportunity

To look in the mirror,

And work out our answer to the question.

And we have help with the work.

Our intuition is our best secret friend,

on our side from birth

to help guide our boat on its path through the sea.

We help it help us by getting out of the way

and being sensitive to the nudges and messages

we get through the day each day.

Between the two of us,

we have all it takes

to live the life that is our life to live

from birth to death,

which is something that has rarely been done

throughout the life of the species.

I'm retired, and still finding my way--but now, I don't have to pretend that I know what I'm doing. I retired after 40.5 years as a minister in the Presbyterian Church USA, serving churches in Louisiana, Mississippi and North Carolina. I graduated from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, in Austin, Texas, and Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana. My wife, Judy, and I have three daughters, five granddaughters, one great granddaughter, and a great grandson on the way, within about ten minutes from where we live--and are enjoying our retirement as much as we have ever enjoyed anything.
